Frequently Asked Questions

What is an end-of-life doula?

An end-of-life doula works with a dying person, their loved ones, and caregivers to provide emotional, physical (non-medical), spiritual, and practical support. The doula will provide information to help the dying person and others make choices about, and understand the nature of, the dying process.

How is an end-of-life doula different than hospice?

An end-of-life doula is a person who provides non-medical care for a dying person and their loved ones. Working with an end-of-life doula does not require a life-limiting illness or physician referral. At this time, end-of-life doulas are not covered by Medicare or private insurances.

Hospices provides medical care for people with an anticipated life expectancy of 6 months or less. Hospice requires a physician referral, and services are covered by Medicare as well as most private insurances.

Do I need to be on hospice to work with an end-of-life doula?

No, you do not need to have a life-limiting condition (other than being human!) or be in hospice care to work with an end-of-life doula.

Are services covered by insurance?

Fair Winds Doula is a fee-for-service provider outside the scope of insurance. However, Fair Winds Doula can work with clients on a sliding-scale basis, as we believe that every person should have access to a doula-supported death.
