Life Review, Meaning, & Legacy Work
Reflection on one’s life is a natural part of the dying process. Life review provides a structured way to explore meaning, experiences, and choices that led to who a person has become and what they learned, practiced, or accomplished throughout their life. Legacy projects deepen the exploration of the dying person’s life and provide a tangible way for loved ones to reconnect with the deceased. Legacy projects can take written, verbal, audio, or video form, or may be expressed in an alternative way desired by the individual.
Typically (4-6) 1-hour sessions.
-
Vigil Planning
The vigil plan incorporates the wishes and personality of the dying person, the needs of loved ones, and elements of their culture, traditions, and life experience. Creation of a vigil plan gives the dying person autonomy to make choices about how they want to be honored during the end of their life. The plan also establishes the mood and environment in the sacred space of the dying person.
Typically (2) 2-hour sessions.
-
Doula Vigil I
The vigil takes place in the days and hours leading up to the dying person’s death. The doula provides emotional, physical (non-medical), and spiritual support that may include guided imagery, music, reading, rituals, and more based on the preferences and wishes of the dying person. The doula supports loved ones by providing information and reassurance about the dying process, respite, and creation of a comfortable and peaceful space.
Vigil support is typically for 2-3 hours per day, up to 5 days.
-
Doula Vigil II
Doula Vigil II provides all of the same offerings as Doula Vigil I, with the addition of longer visits.
Doula Vigil II support is typically for 5-8 hours per day, up to 5 days.
-
Early Grief & Reprocessing
After the individual has died, the doula provides early grief support for loved ones. This support is in the form of deep active listening, reprocessing of feelings surrounding the experience, and provision of grief resources. Retelling the story of the vigil time is at the heart of reprocessing work.
Early grief and reprocessing generally occurs 4-6 weeks after death. Typically (2) 1.5-hour visits or (3) 1-hour visits.
